Concéntrico: Rethinking Our Built Environment Through Design

In this program, Javier Peña Ibañez discussed the main aspects of the Concéntrico Festival, the annual festival of architecture and design that takes place in Logroño, Spain. Ana & Eugeni Bach and KOGAA, two of the studios participating in the 2020’s edition of the festival with an installation, shared their work and their approach to community, public space, and the built environment.

About Concéntrico

Concéntrico is Logroño’s International Festival of Architecture and Design that proposes to reflect on the urban environment and the city. The latest edition, Concéntrico 06, was held from September 3 to September 6, 2020.

The Festival invites visitors to tour the city through installations, exhibitions, meetings, activities, and performances that create a connection between the venues, squares, streets, courtyards, and hidden spaces that usually go unnoticed in their daily lives.

Since 2015, the festival has brought together nearly 60 urban installations created by teams of Spanish and international architects and designers who experiment with new fields of environmental design. In this way, a dialogue is established between the city, heritage, and contemporary architecture that activates citizens’ reflections on these spaces.

Anna & Eugeni Bach

Anna & Eugeni Bach is a Barcelona-based architecture studio founded in 1999. With a broad vision of the field offered by architecture, their interests cover four main areas: Professional, through projects of different scales, both public and private, carried out in the Anna & Eugeni Bach / Bach Arquitectes studio; Teaching, as professors at the ETSAB UPC, the ETSALS URL, EINA UAB, and through conferences and workshops in several European universities; Research, as doctoral students and through projects and installations that work on the perception of space; and Cultural, by being active on the boards of different associations that promote the values of architecture towards society, curating exhibitions and conference cycles, as well as co-editing the magazine fanzine of the Aproximacions collective.

KOGAA

KOGAA is an architecture practice founded in 2015 by Tomas Kozelsky, Viktor Odstrčilík, and Alexandra Georgescu in Brno, Czech Republic. The studio engages with architectural and design projects of all scales and is dedicated to creating projects with a positive impact on users, the environment, and the surrounding community. Parallel to their architecture practice, the three partners have founded the slow development platform Social Reactor, tackling inactive structures and their adaptation to serve new functions. KOGAA has recently lectured at RIBA, the Royal Institute of British Architects, and their projects have been published in architecture publications all around the world.

Javier Peña Ibáñez

Javier Peña Ibáñez is a Madrid-based architect, curator, researcher, teacher and consultant in architecture, design, and the city. He is the Director of Concéntrico, the Logroño International Festival of Design and Architecture, and focuses on the management, curation and dissemination of cultural projects.
