Online artist talk and discussion with artists Luftwerk that took place on Sunday, June 28. The event was moderated by Iker Gil, editor in chief of MAS Context.
In this event, organized by the Goethe-Institut Chicago in collaboration with the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, Elmhurst Art Museum/McCormick House, Farnsworth House, and MAS Context, Luftwerk discussed the interventions in buildings designed by Mies van der Rohe that they have done throughout the years. Following the artist talk, Ivan Blasi (Fundació Mies van der Rohe), John McKinnon (Elmhurst Art Museum/McCormick House), and Scott Mehaffey (Farnsworth House) discussed the the Mies van der Rohe structures in their care and how they welcome and support contemporary practices. The program concluded with a Q+A session with those watching the event.

Geometry of Light at the Barcelona Pavilion
Luftwerk explores light, color, and perception in immersive, installations. Focused on the context of a site for each project, Luftwerk applies their interpretive layer, integrating physical structure, historical context, and embedded information into each piece. Since founding 2007, Luftwerk has amassed a significant body of work ranging from site-specific installations to experimental projects that interpret data. Luftwerk is the artistic collaboration of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero.

Iker Gil is a Chicago-based architect, editor, and curator. He is the director of MAS Studio, a collaborative architecture and design firm as well as the founder and editor-in-chief of the design journal MAS Context. He teaches architecture studios at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and, since 2019, he is the executive director of the SOM Foundation. Gil has collaborated with architects, artists, and designers on projects including Geometry of Light at the Barcelona Pavilion and Farnsworth House, Inside Marina City, and the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin signage standards. Gil was the Associate Curator of the US Pavilion at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale. He has curated exhibitions at the Chicago Architecture Biennial, the Graham Foundation, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
